There's no sense discussing the PS2 remake, as the OP doesn't own it, and I still prefer the DS remake over it anyway. All the other upgrades and refinements and additional content that the remake brings is ace.
If you can get over these two points though, you're in for one of my personal favourite entries in the series. I personally don't mind too much, since DQ7 looked ok, and the original DQ5 clearly still showed its Famicom roots, and it didn't even look particularly great if we judge it by Famicom standards. Depending on how fluent you are in English or on your personal tastes, the DS remake's dialogue can be a bit annoying to read at times. There are only two real caveats I can think of with that release. I've played both the fan-translated SFC version and the DS remake, and I can assure you that of those two, the DS one is definitely the way to go.
